Florida Keys Winter Fishing: What’s Biting in Marathon?

The winter months have officially arrived, and for us in the Florida Keys, that means our favorite season is finally here. While many folks up north are battling brutal cold and snow, we are enjoying perfect 75° to 85° weather with that signature low humidity.
But the good news isn’t just about the incredible weather; it’s about the fishing!
Why Winter Fishing Rocks
With cooler air temperatures, water temperatures are lower on both the Atlantic and the Bayside. After the long, hot summer days and 90°+ water, this drop in temperature is exactly what the fish have been waiting for. They become significantly more active, and their appetites increase.
For our anglers, this means you get to enjoy a nice cool breeze instead of cooking in the summer heat while on anchor, and the action is often non-stop.

What’s Biting: The Reef and Wreck Report
The reef fishing is absolutely fantastic this time of year. We see the fish bite really turn on, especially for our favorite snapper varieties: Yellowtail, Mangrove, and Mutton Snapper.
It’s not just the table fare that is active. Barracudas and sharks seem especially fired up during the winter, providing incredible fights on light tackle. We also see pelagic species moving into our local waters due to cooler water and abundant bait. This includes:
- Spanish Mackerel
- Cero Mackerel
- King Mackerel (Kingfish)
- Sailfish
- Blackfin Tuna
- Cobia
This variety creates exciting reef action, where you truly never know what will hit the deck next.

Choosing the Right Trip
We know that for many first-time visitors, choosing which trip to book can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of options in the Florida Keys.
A common misconception is that you need to book a long-range offshore trip to find great fish. While many folks look for offshore trips hoping for Mahi-Mahi, the reality is that Mahi are not prevalent in the winter months. However, Blackfin Tuna are around year-round, Sailfish tend to join them in shallower waters, and Cobia start to visit the area as well.
Because of this, our top recommendation for both repeat and new customers is usually a 4-Hour Reef Trip or a 6-Hour Reef and Wreck Trip.

The Marathon Advantage: Less Driving, More Fishing
A common question we get is: “How far do we have to travel to get to the fish?”
This is one of the best things about fishing out of Marathon, Florida. The reef and wrecks are extremely close to where our boats are docked. Depending on the weather and ocean conditions, we can be on the fishing grounds in 20 minutes—sometimes even less.
With the speed of Manic Sportfishing boats, the vast majority of your charter is spent fishing, not boat riding. Because of the variety of species in the area right now—including Amberjack, African Pompano, and everything listed above—we can usually bring back a “mixed bag” of fish without traveling far.

We Are Here to Help
We know that while online booking is convenient, many of our new customers prefer to speak to a human being. We try to explain every trip in depth on our website, but nothing beats a conversation.
At Manic Sportfishing, we make sure there is always someone available to answer the phone. If we miss you, we return calls immediately or text you back to set up a time to chat about your trip. We want to make sure you feel confident about your booking.
From the Hook to the Cook
Winter fishing often results in a full cooler. We have mentioned in previous articles that virtually all local restaurants in Marathon are happy to cook your fresh catch for a nominal fee (the famous “Hook and Cook”).
Whether you want to catch-and-release, keep enough for a fresh dinner, or stock the freezer for the winter, we are prepared. We will fillet and package your fish, recommend the best local spots to have it cooked, or direct you to places that will vacuum-seal and ship your catch back home.
Join Us for the Action
The winter months provide excellent action, which is perfect for our family-friendly charters. Most of our groups are looking for exactly what winter provides: fish biting, reels screaming, and rods bent over.
We enjoy it just as much as our customers do. Even a simple four-hour trip can leave a lasting memory for both children and adults. Winter fishing in the Florida Keys is officially here—we hope you are as excited as we are, and we can’t wait to see you out on the water!
The memories made on the water are the ones that last. With the season’s best conditions right now, don’t let this perfect opportunity slip away. Explore our trip options and book your unforgettable experience today! Give us a call at (305)-903-5764, book online or visit our contact page.
