Grouper season just kicked off and the bite has been great!

Summer is almost here, and fishing in the Florida Keys is about to heat up! Being based in Marathon, Manicsportfishing Charters sits in the sweet spot to access some of the most exciting fishing opportunities in the Keys. We’ve also expanded our offshore offerings with the newest addition to the fleet — a 36-foot Grady White equipped with a full bathroom, freshwater system, refrigerator, freezer, and air conditioning at the helm and below for those hot summer days when you need a break from the heat. If you’re planning a trip this summer, here’s what to look forward to — and trust us, you’ll want to get on the water!

Mahi Madness Is Coming

If there’s one thing that gets anglers fired up about summer in the Florida Keys, it’s mahi-mahi season. These stunning, acrobatic fish are an absolute blast to catch, and every summer they show up in force in the waters off Marathon.

Our Captains scan the horizon for weed lines, floating debris, and diving birds — all signs that mahi are stacked up and feeding. When you find them, the action can be non-stop! Mahi fishing is one of the best offshore experiences for families. Everyone on the boat gets involved — spotting debris, helping with lines, and cheering each other on when a fish is hooked. It promotes teamwork and creates memories families talk about for years.

It’s usually a good sign when Mahi start showing up in the first week of May!

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time offshore, the excitement of watching a brightly colored Mahi leap out of the water is unforgettable. The best part? Mahi-mahi is one of the tastiest fish in the ocean. Many restaurants in Marathon will cook your catch for you, or you can have it packaged and shipped home!

The Mangrove Snapper Spawn

Every summer, something incredible happens on the reefs off Marathon. Millions of mangrove snapper migrate from the backcountry out to the reef to spawn, and when they do, the bite is absolutely on fire! These fish are hungry, aggressive, and bigger than you’ll find at any other time of year.

Mangrove snapper are fun for the family to catch and great to eat!

The mangrove snapper spawn is one of our favorite times to fish the reef. The volume of fish stacked on the reef makes for fast, furious action that keeps everyone busy. Even on shorter 3- and 4-hour trips, our clients fill coolers with beautiful, keeper-sized mangrove snapper.

Our Captains love to head out early for a reef trip to load up on mangrove snapper, then push offshore in the afternoon to chase mahi. It’s the ultimate summer combo — a cooler full of delicious snapper and the thrill of tangling with dolphinfish in the same day! Along with mangrove snapper, expect to hook yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, mackerel, grouper, and amberjack on the reef.

Blackfin Tuna at the Marathon Hump

For anglers looking for something a little different, the Marathon Hump is one of our favorite offshore destinations. This underwater seamount rises up from the deep ocean floor and attracts an incredible concentration of marine life, especially blackfin tuna.

Blackfin tuna are hard-fighting fish that test your tackle, and the Hump is one of the best places in the Keys to target them. When conditions are right and the current flows, the tuna bite at the Hump can be outstanding. On the way out, our Captains watch for mahi along weed lines and floating debris. It’s common to pick up beautiful dolphinfish on the ride, adding more variety to an incredible day on the water!

Calm Waters and Perfect Conditions

One of the best things about summer fishing in the Florida Keys is the weather. Summer usually brings calm, flat seas and light winds, making for comfortable, enjoyable days on the water. This is great for families with younger anglers or anyone who prefers a smooth ride. Calm conditions also let us access offshore spots like the Marathon Hump that are harder to reach during rougher months.

There’s nothing quite like cruising across glass-calm water with the sun on your face, dolphins playing in the wake, and the promise of a great day of fishing ahead. Summer in the Keys is the perfect time to get out and enjoy everything the ocean has to offer.
