EXPERIENCE THE RUSH OF TARPON FISHING
If a huge Tarpon isn’t on your bucket list, it should be!
You don’t have to go far to find big fish in the Florida Keys. From late May through the Summer large Trophy size Tarpon can be found under bridges and inshore throughout Marathon. Capable of growing excess of 300lbs and living to ages older than 50 years these fish are strong and smart and put up a heck of a fight! Currents force bait through the bridge pylons where Tarpon remain on the other side to strike from the shadow of the bridge, and this is where we drift our baits. Words can not describe the adrenaline rush you get from seeing a 100+lb Tarpon somersault clear out of the water with your bait in his mouth. This jaw-dropping sight causes many anglers to completely forget to wind because it is that awesome! This is only the first tactic of wise Tarpon as they have many more tricks up their sleeves.
Tarpon
We only catch and release Tarpon. We provide Fibreglass Mount Replica services through Grey’s taxidermy that do not require killing the fish. Tarpon are very bony fish and their meat is not particularly desirable. Furthermore, due to their slow-growing nature and typically old ages they are protected in the State of Florida.
Tarpon Jump
When a Tarpon realizes they are hooked they will make a fast and furious run followed by an acrobatic leap! This is one of the most exciting parts of the fight. Often you will get several more acrobatic jumps during the fight, presenting opportunities to capture some great video and photos.
Tarpon will make a very long initial run of several hundred yards and jump at the end of the run in an attempt to shake the hook out of their mouth. Contrary to all other fishing methods this is the time where you actually want to drop tension on the line to keep the hook in the fishes mouth and minimize the hole in their mouth from widening. If you manage to hang on to your Trophy for this long now you are in the strength and will part of the test, depending on the fish you are looking at a fight that can last anywhere from 40 minutes to several hours. During this grueling battle of strength and wits your Tarpon can take you into to marinas, canals, swim through pylons, under other boat’s anchor lines even take you a few miles offshore!
Very fun day! Greg and Chris were great with my kids (ages 11, 9, and 7). Never had to wait for bait or touch a fish. Caught plenty of delicious fish that we took to a nearby restaurant to have it blackened, coconut fried, and sautéed. Great trip!
