Late summer in the Florida Keys is running true to form and the fishing is still very much on! Around Marathon we’re looking at 88 to 89 degree water, hot humid air, roughly 15-knot southerly breezes, scattered afternoon thunderstorms, and 2 to 3 foot seas with the occasional 4-footer thrown in. Our Captains have been reading the weather windows carefully and working the bite every day, and there’s plenty of good news to share heading into the back half of the season.

Mahi Fishing: The Hunt Is On

The offshore mahi bite is the story right now, and it’s a fun one. It’s not that the fish aren’t there — they absolutely are — they’ve just pushed farther offshore and the pattern has been classic late-summer “on for a few days, off for a few days” as currents, wind, and weed lines shift around. When our Captains find the right water, the action lights up in a hurry.

That’s exactly why local knowledge matters this time of year. Our crews aren’t just running to a waypoint and hoping — they’re hunting weed lines, floating debris, working birds, chasing current edges, and reading the clean blue water for signs of life. When it comes together it really comes together, and we’ve had trips loading the box with schoolies for the cooler and mixing in some proper bulls along the way.

Yellowtail Snapper Fire on the Reef

The reef has been chewing lately! Yellowtail snapper have been the standout, and our clients have been putting some really nice ones in the box on a regular basis. Toss in the bottom fishing action for grouper, mangrove snapper, and mutton snapper, and it’s easy to see why so many of our summer trips are wrapping up with heavy coolers and happy crews.

Big Groupers and Muttons on the Wrecks

The wrecks have been another late-summer gem. On days when the mahi bite is quiet, our Captains have been steering trips out to the wrecks and coming back with some really impressive grouper and mutton snapper. These are the kind of fish that put a serious bend in the rod and fill up a fish box in a hurry. Beat the Heat: Morning or Afternoon Works

It is genuinely hot out there right now on some days, but the good news is our trip options give you a couple of ways to dodge the worst of it. Early-morning trips get you on the water at first light with cool air, calm seas, and a great feeding window before the sun really cranks up. Beat the heat in the afternoon by having your Captain ride offshore looking for fish or on the wrecks to keep the air moving, or select one of our vessels with an Air Conditioned cabin.

Hook and Cook At the Dock

One of the best parts of a summer trip is what happens after we tie up. Our Captains will filet and bag your fish after the trip. You can bring your fish back to your rental, or home or you can visit any of the wonderful restaurants we have on the Island. Hand them your fish, grab a table with a cold drink, and they’ll fry, blacken, or grill it however you like it. It doesn’t get any fresher than that!

Not Every Day Has to Be a Fishing Day
